Our Thoughts on wing's, what we like for who, and some suggestions to help you find your way to the wing that is right for you:
Many dealers sell many kinds of wings. To a new pilot there seems to be a huge selection of wings and very little unbiased advice. As a first time student your first wing should be a choice made with your instructor. Your instructor can help you get a wing that is the right size for you and of a proper skill level to allow your flying to be fun. The Edel Power Atlas is our first pick for the green student, as it both has good performance and excellent safety as a low end DHV 1/2 and Afnor standard as well as DULV. The other good part about this wing is you will not out grow it quickly like a "slugie" DHV-1 and get borded with it and need a new glider. The DHV rating system judges the level of safety of a wing. If a pilot gets into trouble and has a problem, a DHV 1 stands the best chance to recover without pilot input. The trade-off for this safety is a little performance decrease but it's well worth it, as the first time pilot is not ready to fly the paraglider out of danger a 1 or low end 1/2 gives max safety. Our Power Atlas is a low end 1-2 as it only gets a 1-2 in accelerated flight (speed bar /trimmers on) in most catagories. As you move up the scale to the DHV 1-2 and high end 1-2's you get more glide at a very small safety sacrifice. A beginner can many times handle a forgiving low end 1-2 glider like the Edel Power Atlas, that we also highly recommend for free flight. A DHV 2 is for an expert pilot wanting max performance. Anything above that is for the Masters (People with more air time than ground time.) The DHV 1-2 stuff you find what we like to fly since we find a 1-2 more than stratifies our performance requirements. Our personal wings we fly are the Edel Power Atlas , Independence Dragon and Silex. Now for the motor pilot looking for a good time, fast glide carving turns and a fun wing he or she will never outgrow we love the Silex motor glider. Tried and true, not for the green pilot, but a pilot with some flights under their belt. With it's robust lines and 600-hour fabric it is the motor work horse for XC and long flights. Above that level of wing's you’re on your own. If you are shopping for a DHV 2, you should have the air time to know what you want. Below is a list of our suggestions sorted by pilot type.
